Enjoy All That Milaca Minnesota and Mille Lacs County Have To Offer

Milaca, thriving seat of Mille Lacs County, is close enough to enjoy the cultural, sporting and entertaining events of the Twin Cities, and far enough away to enjoy the quiet benefits of small-town living. It is only an hour and ten minutes via the Interstate to downtown Minneapolis.

Mille Lacs Lake and Rum River played a major role in the development of the east central portion of present day Minnesota. Early French fur traders took the Chippewa Indian word "Minsisagaigon" and translated it as "la region de Mille Lacs," meaning "the region of a thousand lakes." The prehistoric mound builders, along with later Indian tribes, used the Rum River as a major inland water route. The name "Rum River" itself, was a later corrupted version of the original "Spirit River" used by the Dakota Indians. In 1837, Indian land-session treaties opened the rich pineland of Wisconsin Territory to white settlers for the first time.

Minnesota Territory was organized in March of 1849. When the railroad first crossed the Rum River, a settlement began to develop in 1885 that was originally named Oak City. In December of that year the Mille Lacs Lumber Company surveyed the plat of land that would later be renamed Milaca in 1886.

As a Minnesota Star City, Milaca is recognized for its leadership in working with local businesses to ensure continued growth. The city boasts a vibrant downtown business district and an active industrial park. Businesses in the community are able to meet the needs of residents and travelers alike.

Local medical facilities include Fairview Northland Clinic. Hospitals and medical centers near Milaca include Fairview Northland Regional Hospital, Mille Lacs Health System and Kanabec Hospital. The Milaca Public School system is made up of an elementary school and a secondary school with grades 7-12. There are two parochial schools in the area.

Milaca is close enough to enjoy the cultural, sporting and entertaining events of the Twin Cities. It is only an hour and ten minutes via Highway 169 to US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis. Other activities include golf, tennis, bowling, and cross-country skiing. We have an outstanding stable for horseback riders, a fine local theatre, and a hockey rink.

Milaca has the finest mountain bike trail system in the state. The 14-mile single-track trails are cut though a park reserve along the beautiful Rum River and provide challenges to riders of any skill level. The trails are also groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter.

The city maintains 4 municipal parks with 2 on the Rum River. The river is home to a wide variety of wildlife and activities around it are becoming more popular. A lush 18-hole golf course is set along the rolling terrain of the Rum River and affords both beauty and challenge. Mille Lacs Lake, in the northern part of the county, contains many resorts and offers excellent fishing and water sports.
